KumDo
Kumdo literally means "the way of the sword." It is actual battle with the “juk do” (4 split bamboo sword) and the “ho goo” (the head and body armor). This practice began around the 18th century. It was developed to maintain skill and mastery in the art, during a time of banishment of all weapons. Utilization of the juk do and the ho goo, the art of Kumdo allowed for more experimentation without injury, thus allowing the style to become more effective and deadlier. The present form that combines inner strength(ki) and the absolute and unbound swing of the sword. It is necessary to demonstrate ki through a scream(ki hup), a complete and correct swing of the sword(kum) and the utilization of one’s lower back and body(chae) in order to receive a point in a tournament. The participant will be unsuccessful with the strike if all three components are not present. (Ki, Kum, Chae)
KuHapDo
Kuhapdo is the way of cutting while standing from a sitting position. It has also been defined as the “quick display sword”. Kuhapdo is a martial art that has profound truth. By practicing the right way of the sword, you develop an indomitable spirit and a respectful courtesy, leading to a stage of being, free of all thoughts. Kuhapdo is different from any arts of fencing. The sword is always in the sheath, and is not drawn unless necessary. Kuhapdo does not permit a misuse of the sword. It cleanses and trains the mind. Through training you develop a higher level of dignity, and gain means of controlling yourself mentally and physically. You can learn a way of true life from Kuhapdo as you learn endurance and politeness from “Dado, Sundo, Chumsun, and a spirit of academic attitude from Seodo”. The essential quality of the Kuhapdo training is to reach the true spirit of swordmanship, developing a higher meaning for life and politeness. It emphasizes an inner strength, not a physical display of strength. Kuhapdo is appropriate for everyone no matter their sex or age. Kuhapdo provides you an opportunity for self retrospect. Kuhapdo is believed to be a lifetime martial art that is best to train your mind and body.
