Tae Kwon Do is at the present, the most popular system of martial arts practiced in the world. T.K.D. was a medal sport in the Olympics for the first time in 1988 games in Seoul Korea. Tae Kwon Do is referred to as a hard system, in that a hard attack (clenched fists and powerful kicks) are met with an equally hard response. In T.K.D. a block is delivered with the same degree of force as the original attack and can be considered a strike. A certain amount of distance is maintained between the participants to allow for kicking. T.K.D. is considered “out-fighting”. Protective sparring gear is worn on the body, hands, feet, and heads. T.K.D. requires the participant to develop flexibility, balance, agility, speed, and power. Since the risk of injury is minimal, instruction is offered to children starting at ages 5, through adulthood.
